A 5-marla plot (25×45 feet, roughly) is the most common size we design for in Khanewal — and the one where a few wrong early decisions make the biggest difference between a house that feels tight and one that feels surprisingly open.

1. Put the staircase on the boundary wall, not in the middle

On a narrow plot, a centrally placed staircase eats into every room around it. Pushing the stair to one side wall, often combined with the entrance lobby, frees up a much more usable rectangle for the lounge and bedrooms on both floors.

2. Borrow light through a courtyard or air well

Rooms in the middle of a deep, narrow plot lose natural light and ventilation. A small open-to-sky air well between the lounge and the bedroom wing — even 4 to 5 feet wide — lets light and air reach rooms that would otherwise depend entirely on artificial lighting during the day.

3. Keep the ground floor open-plan where the family actually gathers

Separating the lounge, dining and kitchen with full walls on a 5-marla ground floor often makes each room feel smaller than it is. A half-wall or open kitchen counter facing the dining area keeps sightlines long, which reads as more space even though the covered area hasn't changed.

  • Open-plan ground floor living reads larger than its actual area
  • Mumty floor used for a single flexible room plus laundry, not squeezed with extra bedrooms
On a 5-marla plot, the floor plan's job is to remove obstructions to light and sightlines — not to add rooms the family will rarely use.

What this means for your furniture layout

These layout decisions are made at the working-plan stage, before the furniture layout is drawn — because door swings, wardrobe walls and bed placement all depend on where the stair and air well finally sit. This is why we draw furniture layout as its own sheet rather than sketching it onto the working plan afterwards.
